Mark Allen beat Judd Trump in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals on Thursday and has credited a tactic he has copied from the world champion.

Trump was enjoying a 13-match winning streak but it came to a dramatic end in China with the Pistol hammering the world number one 6-1 and booking a place in the semi-finals.

It continues an impressive start to the season for the Northern Irishman, who also reached the final four at the International Championship last month.

The world number seven is trying a new approach to his game this season, no longer relying on coaching, but instead bringing his best friend on tour with him to keep him relaxed and help with the long hours of practice and travel.

It is a tactic Trump employed with his brother Jack, starting last year, which the world champ has credited with his immense success over the last 12 months.

‘I’ve brought my mate Kyle with me, he’s been my best mate for a long time,’ Allen told World Snooker after beating Trump.

‘I’ve brought him with me for the year to see how it goes, I’m trying to get away from the coaching aspect of it.

‘Don’t get me wrong, if I needed it I’ve still got Terry Griffiths on the phone and he’s been more than willing to listen to me talking rubbish down the phone over the years.

‘But I’m just trying a different approach, a more relaxed approach. Me and Kyle have come here and we’re going to enjoy ourselves as well as knuckling down on the table.

‘He’s been coming with me to the club every day, lifting the balls out a bit like Jack does for Judd.

‘If you can copy the world champion you’re not doing things too badly.’

Trump had not lost for over five months before Allen dispatched him in Shanghai, and the former Masters champion is delighted to halt the world number one in his tracks.

‘It’s very satisfying,’ Allen continued. ‘To beat the world number one and world champion by any scoreline is a good win and means you’re doing things right.

‘I made some mistakes today and Judd missed some balls that he wouldn’t normally miss, but a 13-match winning run has to come to an end at some point.

‘To play at the high level he’s been playing at for such a long time speaks volumes for where his game’s at and to beat him after that winning run is a proud moment for me.’

The Pistol will now face either Shaun Murphy or Jack Lisowski in the semi-finals and he is bullish that he is in China to get his hands on the trophy.

‘I’m here to win tournaments,’ said Allen. ‘I don’t want to just get to semi-finals and quarter-finals, I want to make winning these events a regular occurrence.

‘I’ve put in plenty of practice after the World Championship finished, I didn’t have much of a break and I’m sharper than I normally am at this time of the year.’
