Mesut Ozil advised Mohamed Elneny to join Besiktas after falling out of favour at Arsenal under Unai Emery.

Elneny has spent three years at Arsenal, but joined Turkish giants Besiktas on season-long loan during the summer.

The 27-year-old was not in Emery’s plans and revealed he sought advice from Ozil before deciding to make the move to Turkey.

‘Mesut is an amazing man,’ he told Milliyet.

‘He is a person that I really care about. We had wonderful moments together at Arsenal.

‘Of course, I spoke with him before my decision to come to Besiktas. Mesut knows the country very well.

‘He advised me to join Besiktas. After I completed my move to the club, I called him and invited him here.’

While Ozil is a central figure in the Arsenal squad, the midfielder is yet to feature for the club this season.

Illness and injury has kept the 30-year-old sidelined this season, but Ozil did make the bench for Arsenal’s last game before the international break.

Arsenal resume club action on Sunday with an away trip to Watford.
