A dad accused of murdering his 11-month-old son after allegedly throwing him into a river has appeared in court.

Zak Eko, 22, is said to have hurled Zakari William Bennett-Eko into the water in his Moses basket after going out to buy milk.

Emergency services were called to the River Irwell, in Radcliffe, shortly before 4.25pm on Wednesday, following reports that an infant was in the water.

The baby boy was retrieved from the river in a critical condition, but died hours later after being taken to hospital.

Eko, wearing a grey top and jogging bottoms, appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday for a hearing lasting barely a minute.

The mother of a 12-month-old boy who died when he was thrown off a bridge into a river in his Moses basket has told of her heartbreak and said: 'I lost my baby today.' Emma Blood, 22, has posted an emotional statement on Facebook this morning after her son Zakari plunged to his death into the River Irwell, in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester. The baby's father, named locally as Zak Bennett-Eko, 22, was arrested by police as he sat with customers in the nearby Lock Keeper pub. It is believed he had taken his son out to buy milk.
